Ever wonder how we find all the amazing products on our shelves? Trust me, even after doing this for nearly forty years, it’s not always that easy. But thankfully we work with some really talented people in the industry who help us out along the way.

Gary Ballard, our good friend and wine rep from MS Walker AND Marblehead resident, helped me out in a big way last year when he introduced me to the Matchbook Wine Company. Matchbook was relatively new to the Massachusetts market, but Gary thought it would be a perfect fit for Shubie’s. So he set up an appointment with Joan Bowie, the rep for Matchbook, and the three of us tasted the entire line up of Matchbook and Mossback wines. It was a two hours well spent!

As I was sipping the wines and Joan was telling me the history of the winery (John and Lane Giguiere are the proprietors and are legendary in the wine world), I had two thoughts: a)  I can’t believe I get paid to taste wine! and b) I can’t believe how incredible these wines are! Have I mentioned yet that all the wines from the Matchbook portfolio are under $20!
Needless to say, the wines have become a smash hit at the store and it’s pretty remarkable that our #1 selling Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are both from the same winery. Isn’t it great when your friends know what you like!
Cheers,
George
P.S. Our good friend Joan Bowie will be in the store to celebrate our 68th anniversary with us on Saturday, April 9 from 1p-4p and will be pouring the entire line up!

mossback central coast pinotMossback Central Coast Pinot Noir, $14.99/btl
Our #1 Pinot Noir!
Your eyes are not deceiving you! Real Californian Pinot Noir that is really good for $15. It really does exist! A voluptuous Pinot Noir with rich, full flavors that delivers a big, juicy punch. With dense aromas of blackberry and cherry that mingle with hints of toasty oak, cocoa and a touch of chai, you’ll wish you discovered this gem sooner! The Central Coast appellation exhibits the varietal characteristics of bright red fruit, spice and balanced acidity. Fun fact: they blend in a touch of Petit Verdot to lengthen the flavors and add depth and concentration. Guess what? It works!

mossback chardonnayMossback Russian River Chardonnay, $14.99/btl
Our #1 Chardonnay!
Despite the drought in California, the Russian River Valley has seen ideal weather patterns the last few years, which allows the growth of intensely varietal fruit with great acidity (aka they’ve made some killer wine the last few years!). A truly elegant Chardonnay bursting with aromas of apple, mango and crisp tropical fruit and just a hint of butter. The subtle oak and vanilla richness make this wine a perfect match with triple-creme cheeses or just to have a glass (or two!) on the patio this summer.
