Find Your Redwood
Ecological thinker, writer and mountaineer John Muir once said, "In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks." The coast of Northern California is unique - it is the home of the Giant Redwood forest.
Redwood Empire is a distillery in the heart of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma, CA. They are heavily inspired by nature; they name their products after specific, giant trees in the heart of the Redwood forest. The cool climate that helps these trees grow almost makes it a perfect place to make excellent whiskey.
They plant a tree for every bottle sold. So far, that's almost 350,000 trees. We were so impressed with the mission and the whiskey, we want to present them to you. For more information on the specific trees these whiskeys are named after, visit their website here.
REDWOOD EMPIRE PIPE DREAM - BOURBON WHISKEY
The namesake Redwood, Pipe Dream, resides in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It stands at an incredible 367 feet tall. The distillers say this tree inspires them to reach higher in their pursuit of excellence.
Pipe Dream has a rich golden hue in the glass. On the nose, you will enjoy maple, honey and vanilla. Those flavors continue to the palate with the addition of a pecan-like nuttiness and a lingering char from the barrel aging. The mash is 75% corn which provides a hint of sweetness which is balanced by the spiciness and light smoke of the 21% rye.
REDWOOD EMPIRE LOST MONARCH - BLEND OF RYE & BOURBON WHISKEYS
The Lost Monarch is the world's largest redwood by volume. At 320 feet tall and 26 feet in diameter, it's no surprise that it has inspired these distillers.
The blended Lost Monarch is the most complex in terms of flavor and aroma. A dark Amber color, the nose is intricate. Clove, cinnamon, vanilla, orange zest and butterscotch all make an appearance accented by a touch of sandalwood. On the palate, maple, vanilla and caramel lead the charge. This whiskey has a long peppery finish.
REDWOOD EMPIRE EMERALD GIANT - RYE WHISKEY
The Emerald Giant is the fastest growing Redwood in the world. Currently standing at 360 feet, it gains over 50 cubic feet and 1,500 pounds of mass every year.
Lost Monarch is a burnt orange color. On the nose and palate, it reminds you that this whiskey is unapologetically rye. Honey and orange peel compliment this flavor beautifully. This is definitely the most warm spice driven whiskey of the three. The honey, orange peel and rye are complimented by a lingering cinnamon finish.
